Who Is Tommy Hilfiger?

Tommy Hilfiger is the founder of the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation. In 1971, he opened his first clothing shop called People’s Place with his life savings of $150 in downtown Elmira, where he would first start designing. After that went bankrupt in 1977, he began learning more about the business side of the fashion industry and eventually opened a store called Tommy Hill in New York City in 1979.

Where Is Tommy Hilfiger From?

Tommy Hilfiger was born in Elmira, a small city in upstate New York, USA. He graduated from Elmira Free Academy high school in 1969 and started working in a clothing store in Cape Cod, Massachusetts that same Summer. It was here his interest in fashion would begin, eventually opening his very first clothing store, People’s Place, in 1971.

When Was Tommy Hilfiger Founded?

The Tommy Hilfiger corporation was founded in 1985 when Tommy was approached by The Murjani Group, who would provide the help and funding required to get it off the ground. They started selling womenswear in 1996 and in 1997, they opened their first Beverly Hills store. The brand would quickly go global with stores opening across the world, including the first Tommy Hilfiger Ireland store in Dublin in 2007.
