How to Clean Birkenstocks?
You’ve got your go-to pair for beach trips, Summer getaways and everyday errands, now it’s time to keep them in pristine condition. To clean your Birkenstock sandals, you’ll need: a brush, an old toothbrush, a cloth, some leather shampoo and two bowls of water. For nubuck leather and suede sandals, start by removing dried coarse dust and dirt with a brush, while for natural and smooth leather, use a lint-free, slightly damp cloth. Next, open the straps and clean the inside and outside of them with a damp brush. For the footbed, mix a little water and some leather shampoo together and rub it in with an old toothbrush. To remove the lather, use a wet cloth and wash the sandals off with lukewarm water. Make sure the sandals don’t become completely wet.
Need to clean the sole too? Use a damp brush then a damp cloth to get them looking as good as new. Finally, let your sandals air out at room temperature to retain their moisture-absorbing qualities -don’t let them dry in the sun or on a radiator. They should dry completely after 24 hours and be ready to be worn again! If you want to protect your sandals for the next wear, spray nubuck leather or suede regularly with a colourless waterproofing spray, covering the footbed with paper. If the uppers are made from natural leather, use leather grease regularly to maintain them.
How Should Birkenstocks Fit?
Making sure every foot is accommodated, Birkenstock sandals offer a deep footbed in both regular and narrow widths for different sized feet. With adjustable buckle straps to the uppers, they tailor to your size.
Make sure there are a few millimetres of space in the heel and toes for extra flexibility in each stride. Your foot should be nestled in the footbed and not resting on the edges. When you close the straps, make sure they don’t sit too tightly, especially models with heel straps so your foot doesn’t push too far forward.
How to Break in Birkenstocks?
The brand recommend that you break in a new pair of Birkenstock sandals slowly. Start wearing them around your house to get used to the fit as it can take time to adjust to the contours of the footbed. Begin with an hour or two at a time until they begin to mould to your foot and feel more comfortable.
