In 1917, Converse All Star shoes made their first appearance, marking the brand’s first dive into the world of athletic footwear. Designed to accommodate the growing popularity of basketball, which at the time was a relatively new sport, the rubber-and-canvas high tops emphasised performance above all else.
Who Is Chuck Taylor?
Semi-professional basketball player Chuck Taylor, who played for the Akron Firestones, can be credited with pushing the All Stars into the big leagues. Sensing an opportunity, he joined the Converse sales team in 1921, and with his marketing expertise, the trainers quickly became the definitive shoes for both professionals and casual enjoyers of the sport. Not only did they provide increased traction on the court thanks to their diamond tread pattern, but they also looked stylish, which later helped the sneakers transition from the sporting market to that of lifestyle. In recognition of his contribution to the success of the All Star, the runners were officially rebranded Converse Chuck Taylor All Star in 1932, with his name appearing on the ankle patch.
Platform Shoes, Low Tops, and Leather Uppers
Today, Chuck Taylors remain a staple of the footwear community, and there are many variations of the shoe, ranging from platforms to low tops to those with leather uppers. If you’re looking for a trendy pair of trainers to wear every day, All Stars are an inspired and long-proven choice. At JD Sports Ireland, we stock a variety of colourways, including classic white and black, so you can choose the aesthetic that best matches your personality.
